Your Child's SSI Check Goes Up in January. The $2,000 Line Doesn't

BLOG
October 22, 2026

What the 2027 Social Security raise means for families of children and adults with disabilities, and what to check before the year ends.

The short version

  • SSI rises 3.6% in January 2027, to $1,029 a month for an individual (up from $994)
  • The $2,000 limit on countable assets doesn't rise. It hasn't changed since 1989.
  • January's SSI payment arrives on December 31, 2026. It's January's money, not an extra check.
  • Bigger checks under a frozen limit means balances can creep toward $2,000. A special needs trust or an ABLE account gives savings a safe place to go.

What Social Security announced

On October 14, Social Security announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for2027, the largest raise since 2023. About 7.3 million people who receive SSIwill see it, along with nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries.

For the families we work with, these are the numbers that matter:

2026 2027
SSI federal payment, individual (monthly) $994 $1,029
SSI federal payment, couple (monthly) $1,491 $1,544
SSI asset limit, individual $2,000 $2,000
SSI asset limit, couple $3,000 $3,000
Average SSDI benefit, disabled worker (estimated) $1,642 $1,701
Substantial gainful activity, non-blind (monthly) $1,690 $1,770
SSI student earned income exclusion (monthly / yearly) $2,410 / $9,730 $2,500 / $10,080
Trial work month threshold $1,210 $1,270

SSI amounts are federal maximums. Your child's actual payment can be lower depending on other income and living arrangements, and some states, including Michigan, add a state supplement.

The number that doesn't move

$2,000. That's the line between keeping benefits and losing them.

SSI caps what a person can own in countable resources at $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Medicaid tied to SSI usually follows the same limit. Those amounts were last updated in 1989. The 2027 raise doesn't touch them.

Here's why that matters. Every raise puts a little more money into the same account, under the same ceiling. Money left over at the start of a month counts toward the limit. If your child sets aside part of each check, the balance can drift past $2,000 without anyone noticing, until a review catches it.

None of this means the raise is bad news. It means the plan around the check has to keep up with it.

One date to circle: December 31

January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, so Social Security will pay January's SSI on Thursday, December 31, 2026, already at the new rate. Two SSI deposits will land in December.

The second one is not a bonus. It's January's payment, arriving a day early, and it has to cover January. Plan to spend it in January, and don't treat it as extra savings. If your child's account usually runs close to $2,000, look at the balance before the year ends.

If your child works, or plans to

The raise also lifts the earnings thresholds that matter most for young adults starting jobs:

  • Still in school? If your child is under 22 and regularly attending school, SSI can ignore up to $2,500 of earnings a month in 2027, up to $10,080 for the year.
  • Substantial gainful activity: $1,770 a month in 2027. For SSDI and Childhood Disability Benefits, earning above this level can affect eligibility.
  • Trial work period: for SSDI, any month with earnings over $1,270 counts as a trial work month.

Work and benefits interact in ways that surprise families. Talk with us before a new job or a raise, not after.

Where extra money can go safely

  • A special needs trust. Money held in a properly drafted special needs trust doesn't count toward the $2,000 limit. Grandparents and other relatives can give to the trust instead of to your child directly.
  • An ABLE account. If your child's disability began before age 46, an ABLE account can hold savings. For SSI, the first $100,000 in an ABLE account doesn't count toward the $2,000 limit.

Both tools work only when someone runs them: watching balances, paying the right expenses from the right account, reporting changes on time. That's the difference between having a trust and having a plan.

A trust document without a care plan is a guess with legal formatting.

In a Fuller Life Plan, the legal documents, the benefits and the people involved are built as one plan, then run for life. Fuller Special Needs Law builds the plan. Advocacy Inc. runs it. For life. Under one roof.

What to do before January

Watch for the notice. It appears in your child's my Social Security Message Center in late November. Paper notices arrive in December. Keep a copy.
Check every account in your child's name. If the total runs close to $2,000, talk to us about a special needs trust or an ABLE account before the new year.
Budget the December 31 deposit as January's money.
Talk to grandparents before the holidays. Cash gifts to your child count toward the limit. Gifts to a special needs trust don't.
Report changes on time. Changes in income, work or living arrangements are due to Social Security by the 10th of the following month.

Turning 18 soon?

At 18, Social Security stops counting parents' income for SSI and reviews your child's disability under adult rules. Next month's A Fuller Focus walks through everything that changes on the 18th birthday.

Where to start

You don't need to solve all of this at once. The free Lifetime Protection Check takes about 3 minutes and shows where your child's long-term protection stands today. If you'd rather talk it through, call our team at 888-280-2178 and we'll help you decide what to do first.

Common Questions

How much is SSI in 2027?

The federal maximum is $1,029 a month for an individual and $1,544 for an eligible couple, starting with the payment issued December 31, 2026.

Did the SSI asset limit go up in 2027?

No. It remains $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. It was last updated in 1989.

Why are there two SSI payments in December 2026?

January 1, 2027 is a federal holiday, so January's payment is issued December 31. It's January's payment arriving early, not an extra one.
